How To Flip & Pitch like a Pro
Flipping and pitching has grown in popularity over the last decade and is widely considered one of the most thrilling techniques! This technique requires a heavier setup to easily penetrate vegetation and cover, making it highly effective in the summer when vegetation is most dense!
To flip and pitch effectively, make very short casts into your desired heavy cover (e.g., floating grass patches, lily pads, wood laydowns). Once it hits the water let the bait sink and snake its way through the cover where fish often hide in the shade during summer. Once it stops sinking, slowly lift your rod tip until you feel line tension, and place your index finger on the line to help detect subtle nibbles and bites.
When you feel nibbles or bites (which will feel like a THUMP instead of a “bounce” or “tink”), ensure your drag is set to maximum and yank your rod up as hard as you can! Your goal is to pull the fish to the surface as quick as possible giving it less chance to get caught in cover. Once you’ve set the hook, reel it in, maintaining heavy pressure, until you have your catch in hand!
Flipping and pitching is fun and super effective, but you’ll want a longer more stiff Rod (preferably 7 feet or longer and medium-heavy or stiffer) to maximize the technique’s effectiveness. Additionally 50lb+ braid is highly recommended to give you the pulling power and abrasion resistance needed to pull big fish out of cover!
